In a TEOTWAWKI scenario, obtaining sustenance will be one of your first and most important concerns. Being a vegetarian will probably make it more difficult for you to search for survival food.
In general, meat is portrayed as the primary means of obtaining protein and making food that’s easy to carry. However, you can go around it if you’d like. There are plenty of foods that are not animal sourced, and there are plenty of methods to store them for long term use.
You can fit the right amounts of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals in any vegetarian, vegan, ovo-lacto vegetarian or meat-eaters’ diet. And if you are looking to avoid animal sourced products all together, there are still plenty of alternative options.
Coconut milk and oil
You can purchase it canned and store it for years. It’s a great replacement for regular milk and it’ very nutritious. You can drink it straight away, you can cook with it and it’s great for your skin too. You can actually use it as sunscreen. Keep in mind it becomes solid at temperatures below 72 °F.
Granola bars are packed with proteins and nutrients. They have a large calorie count to weight ratio, making them a great survival food choice. The best part is you can make them yourself. All you need are some maple syrup or honey, oats, nuts, dried fruits and berries. You can add flour and cook it for a bit or simply mix them, put them on a cooking sheet and cut them into bars. They are a great source of fat, proteins, carbohydrates and some vitamins.
Fresh and Canned Vegetables
It probably makes sense to store canned goods for survival purposes. You can check at local farmers’ markets for fresh vegetables. It’s fairly easy to grow your own vegetables if you would like. Also canning them is easy and you can do it by yourself. Growing your own vegetables will also give you a competitive advantage when bartering in a crisis situation.
Fruit and Veggie Leather
Mix vegetables and fruits together to make a paste. You can control how sweet you want it to be depending on what fruits and vegetables you put in it. You may also add your choice of spices. You want to cook it, mill it to a paste and then let it dry out on a dehydrator. It’s a very good way to get a healthy dose of nutrients. You can seal the leather in vacuum packed bags for long term storage.
Almond milk is a great source of proteins and carbohydrates. You can purchase it or make it yourself. If you would rather do it yourself, you’ll need some almonds and some water. If you like you can add some vanilla, honey or other spices. You’ll also need a blender or something to crush the milk out of the almonds.
Dried Fruits and Vegetables
It probably makes sense to store fruits and vegetables in various forms. Dehydrating them is one of the best methods for long term storage. You can purchase them dried, you can purchase a dehydrator or you can even make one yourself, easily. The fruits and vegetables don’t even need any special canning or packaging. They will last for ages, providing a great source of vitamins and carbohydrates. For proteins you will probably move towards dried beans and nut butters. Dried beans, similar to rice, can be stored in an airtight compartment for longer periods of time.
There are plenty of ways in which vegetarians can prepare for food shortages. There are also some recipes you could make your own vegetarian survival food. You could grow your own and store it for extended periods of time. In a SHTF situation, you can also use your personal garden to sustain your family or to barter for other goods or services.
